Why youโll love this
This easy salmon recipe is a must-try if youโre looking for ways to incorporate salmon into your week, new to cooking fish, or just looking for a new and delicious seafood recipe!
These simple salmon bites are tossed in a flavorful teriyaki sauce and they come together in less than 15 minutes. It’s the perfect recipe for busy weeknights, and there’s no marinating needed!
Fatty fish like salmon provides your body with essential omega-3 fatty acids, which are healthy fats that many of us don’t get enough of. This recipe is a great way to include more salmon in your diet and eat more healthfully while prioritizing flavor, too!
Salmon is also a great protein source, and one serving of this dish has 24 grams of protein! Pair these salmon bites with veggies and rice for a balanced, nutritious dinner.
And PS- this easy homemade sauce is SO much better than store-bought teriyaki sauce. You only need a few simple ingredients and there’s plenty of sauce to serve an extra drizzle over a bed of rice and veggies.
Letโs get into what you need to make it.
Ingredients
- Fresh salmon: I like to save a step and buy skinless salmon fillets because it makes preparing them so much faster and easier. Simply cut fresh salmon with a sharp knife into 1 to 2-inch bites and you are good to go!
- Salt + pepper: These salmon bites donโt need a lot of seasoning since they’re coated in a super flavorful sauce, so a little salt and black pepper is just enough!
- Oil: Any neutral oil will work, but my favorite is avocado oil or olive oil. You can also use cooking spray.
Sauce ingredients
- Reduced-sodium soy sauce: Using low-sodium soy sauce adds all of the savory flavor of soy sauce with a little less salt. You can swap in liquid aminos or coconut aminos as well.
- Orange juice: Citrus gives this sauce a bright flavor and some acidity to balance the salty soy sauce and sweetness of the honey. You can substitute rice vinegar, mirin or lime juice here too. Pineapple juice would be a great swap, too!
- Honey: Honey adds the perfect amount of sweetness to compliment the savory salty flavors. You can also swap this out for maple syrup or brown sugar if needed.
- Garlic: Fresh garlic adds extra flavor to this sauce. I like to use a garlic microplane to save myself chopping time, but you can also finely mince it. If you don’t have fresh, you can use ยฝ tsp of garlic powder instead.
- Ginger: Another flavorful aromatic component of this sauce is fresh ginger. I like to keep peeled ginger root in the freezer to use for recipes because it retains all of its flavor and itโs so easy to microplane when frozen!
- Optional garnishes: green onions, white sesame seeds, sesame oil, chili oil or chili flakes, lime wedges or avocado.
How to make teriyaki salmon bites
- Mix all sauce ingredients in a small bowl. Set aside.
- Season salmon lightly with salt and pepper.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, lightly coat the pan with olive oil, avocado oil or spray with non-stick spray.
- Arrange salmon cubes in a single layer in the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes. Flip, and then cook for an additional 2-3 minutes on the other side until salmon is just cooked through.
- Reduce heat to medium/low and then add sauce to the cooked salmon. Stir gently and cook an additional 2-3 minutes until sauce is thickened.
How to store
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat in the microwave in 30 second increments.
Variations
- Serve with white rice or noodles and a side of veggies for a complete meal. I like to serve with broccoli, green beans, stir fried peppers or bok choy.
- Make these air fryer teriyaki salmon bites by adding salmon to an air fryer basket for 8-10 minutes at 400 degrees F. Heat sauce in a small saucepan for 2-3 minutes until thickened. Toss with salmon to combine.
- Add a drizzle of sesame oil and rice vinegar for extra flavor.
- Not a fan of salmon? Swap it out for shrimp, chicken, tofu or even veggies- just add the sauce at the end.
- Skip the โbitesโ and cook salmon fillets whole.
