Why you’ll love this cottage cheese mousse
Cottage cheese can satisfy your chocolate cravings- you heard me. At this point you have to ask: is there anything cottage cheese can’t do!?
This cottage cheese chocolate mousse is smooth, sweet and creamy and far from the regular texture and flavor of cottage cheese. If you’ve never had whipped cottage cheese before, it’s a completely different situation than regular cottage cheese.
You only need a few simple ingredients and a high speed blender or food processor to transform plain cottage cheese into a delicious sweet treat.
Cottage cheese is unique and versatile because of its mild flavor, high protein content and its ability to be blended into a super creamy texture. There are so many delicious ways to use it.
It works well for both savory and sweet recipes, including this high protein chocolate mousse! It’s mild “cheesy” flavor gives this mousse an almost cheesecake-like flavor. Yum!
Let’s get into what you need to make it.
Ingredients
- Cottage cheese: Cottage cheese is of course our secret ingredient. You can use whatever you favorite cottage cheese is, I prefer Good Culture small curd full-fat cottage cheese (4%) for the best creamy texture. If you use fat free cottage cheese, the texture will be less creamy.
- Unsweetened cocoa powder: Cocoa powder is what makes the mousse chocolate-y. If you like a dark chocolate flavor, add more!
- Honey: You can use any liquid sweetener of choice that you enjoy. Maple syrup will also work, but the flavor and sweetness level will be different. If you want a sugar-free option, try a liquid sweetener like allulose.
- Vanilla extract: Just a small amount of vanilla extract adds more flavor to the mousse.
Step-by-step instructions
- Add all ingredients to a food processor (this is my favorite) or high speed blender. You can also use an immersion blender in a tall cylinder container.
- Blend together on high until mouse is completely smooth. Note: If it looks grainy, keep blending!
- Top with whipped cream, fruit, or chocolate shavings!
Note: I find that it has a fluffier texture immediately after blending. If you want it to be more like a cottage cheese chocolate pudding, place in the refrigerator to firm up for about 20-30 minutes before serving.
Storage info: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
Recipe FAQ
Is this a healthy dessert?
As a dietitian, I’m not anti-dessert (sometimes you need the real deal, and that’s okay!). But if you’re looking for a sweet treat that has a little more bang for its buck nutritionally, this is a great option with 15 g of protein per serving to keep you full and support any protein goals you have.
How do I get my cottage cheese smoother?
If you’re cottage cheese is grainy, try blending it for longer! I find that the extra minutes of blending really make a big difference in the smoothness of the mousse. If needed (some blenders/food processors may not be powerful enough), add a splash of milk or heavy cream to help it blend smoothly.
Variations
- Sprinkle with chopped nuts or granola for crunch.
- Top with fresh fruit like sliced strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries.
- Layer with whipped cream and fresh fruit for a mousse parfait.
- Add 1-2 tbsp of peanut butter for a chocolate peanut butter mousse. You can also use almond butter, cashew butter or sunflower seed butter.
- Stir in mini chocolate chips for a chocolate chip mousse.
- Stir in a crumbled Oreo or two for a high protein Oreo mousse!
- Add a tiny bit of peppermint extract for a mint chocolate mousse!

Although this tasted good. It never did set up. Chocolate mousse came out quite thin and runny.
I’ve never had an issue with it setting up but a few people have, so my guess is that it’s dependent on which type of cottage cheese you use. I recommend a thick cottage cheese like Good Culture 4% because it’s the thickest. You can add a tablespoon of ground flax or chia seeds to thicken things up!
Simple to make and delicious protein snack! A winner!
So happy you love it!
This chocolate mousse is so delicious. I ate it with strawberries. It will definitely be in the regular rotation. Next time I want to try and freeze some!
Ooooooo…freezing some sounds like a good idea, thanks!
Decadent!
Excellent and very easy!! Thank you!
Very tasty, easy to do -a great alternative to mousse.I added layers of cream and banana.
Yum! Adding layers really takes this one to the next level- I’ll have to try bananas!
I don’t have honey is Stevie acceptable to use ?
Yes you could use stevia if you like that sweetener!
Great recipees
Do you drain the whey from the cottage cheese? Mine was runny and didnโt set up like a mousse or pudding after sitting.
I recommend full-fat cottage cheese for this reason. Cottage cheese also tends to become thinner as it gets warmer, which happens in the blender, so I recommend letting it set in the fridge for an hour to re-thicken up if it’s too thin. You can also add a tbsp of chia or flax to help it thicken up.
Is 2% Cottage cheese will work
It will work but will likely need to be popped back into the fridge to firm up! If it’s not thick enough, you can also blend with a tbsp of chia or flax!
I just made the chocolate mouse. I added some melted peanut butter to it and also used Splenda to sweeten. Of course I had to taste test, yummy. It is not to sweet or bland. I put it in the freezer in a glass container. Let’s see how it taste when done
Yum!! Adding peanut butter is always a good choice ๐
Absolutely delicious! I will try and drizzle some melted peanut butter on top next time before I put it in the fridge to set. ๐
So glad you enjoyed! Definitely try a peanut butter drizzle ๐
