Why you’ll love this cottage cheese mousse
Cottage cheese can satisfy your chocolate cravings- you heard me. At this point you have to ask: is there anything cottage cheese can’t do!?
This cottage cheese chocolate mousse is smooth, sweet and creamy and far from the regular texture and flavor of cottage cheese. If you’ve never had whipped cottage cheese before, it’s a completely different situation than regular cottage cheese.
You only need a few simple ingredients and a high speed blender or food processor to transform plain cottage cheese into a delicious sweet treat.
Cottage cheese is unique and versatile because of its mild flavor, high protein content and its ability to be blended into a super creamy texture. There are so many delicious ways to use it.
It works well for both savory and sweet recipes, including this high protein chocolate mousse! It’s mild “cheesy” flavor gives this mousse an almost cheesecake-like flavor. Yum!
Let’s get into what you need to make it.

Ingredients
- Cottage cheese: Cottage cheese is of course our secret ingredient. You can use whatever you favorite cottage cheese is, I prefer Good Culture small curd full-fat cottage cheese (4%) for the best creamy texture. If you use fat free cottage cheese, the texture will be less creamy.
- Unsweetened cocoa powder: Cocoa powder is what makes the mousse chocolate-y. If you like a dark chocolate flavor, add more!
- Honey: You can use any liquid sweetener of choice that you enjoy. Maple syrup will also work, but the flavor and sweetness level will be different. If you want a sugar-free option, try a liquid sweetener like allulose.
- Vanilla extract: Just a small amount of vanilla extract adds more flavor to the mousse.
Step-by-step instructions
- Add all ingredients to a food processor (this is my favorite) or high speed blender. You can also use an immersion blender in a tall cylinder container.

- Blend together on high until mouse is completely smooth. Note: If it looks grainy, keep blending!

- Top with whipped cream, fruit, or chocolate shavings!
Note: I find that it has a fluffier texture immediately after blending. If you want it to be more like a cottage cheese chocolate pudding, place in the refrigerator to firm up for about 20-30 minutes before serving.
Storage info: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
Recipe FAQ
Is this a healthy dessert?
As a dietitian, I’m not anti-dessert (sometimes you need the real deal, and that’s okay!). But if you’re looking for a sweet treat that has a little more bang for its buck nutritionally, this is a great option with 15 g of protein per serving to keep you full and support any protein goals you have.
How do I get my cottage cheese smoother?
If you’re cottage cheese is grainy, try blending it for longer! I find that the extra minutes of blending really make a big difference in the smoothness of the mousse. If needed (some blenders/food processors may not be powerful enough), add a splash of milk or heavy cream to help it blend smoothly.
Variations
- Sprinkle with chopped nuts or granola for crunch.
- Top with fresh fruit like sliced strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries.
- Layer with whipped cream and fresh fruit for a mousse parfait.
- Add 1-2 tbsp of peanut butter for a chocolate peanut butter mousse. You can also use almond butter, cashew butter or sunflower seed butter.
- Stir in mini chocolate chips for a chocolate chip mousse.
- Stir in a crumbled Oreo or two for a high protein Oreo mousse!
- Add a tiny bit of peppermint extract for a mint chocolate mousse!

Hi! We’ve made this twice – first time with maple syrup, second time with Monkfruit sweetener. Both times it tasted very salty. We can’t figure out why. Any ideas? Both times we used 2tbsp of cocoa.
Cottage cheese on it’s own is pretty salty and some brands have more sodium than others, so I experiment with another brand that has lower sodium than the one you’re currently using. You can also check your grocery store for a no salt added cottage cheese. You can also bump the sweetener up a little 🙂
Mine stayed fully liquid. Any idea why? Thanks!
Hmm, interesting! It may have been the cottage cheese that you used. Since there is such minimal liquid in this, I don’t know why it came out liquidy. When cottage cheese is blended, it’s quite thick! I recommend full fat cottage cheese. Otherwise, you can add a tablespoon or two of chia seeds before blending to thicken it more.
Yummy and healthy!!!
So glad you enjoyed, thank you for leaving a review!
I really hate cottage cheese. Do you think I could make this with ricotta cheese?
You could! It just won’t be as high in protein- you could also use Greek yogurt or do half ricotta/half Greek yogurt.
This is a wonderful recipe ~ I made it per recipe, using 1 tbsp of unsweetened cocoa powder and adding 1 tbsp. Santa Cruz Organic Peanut Butter. What a treat ~ thank you for this recipe!!
So glad you enjoyed it! A peanut butter addition is so good!
Hi.
Can you use peanut butter powder instead of choc?
I’m sure you could! I don’t know how it will turn out because I haven’t tried it but you could definitely experiment 🙂
I added PB powder and it was delish. Obviously calories and protein then goes up accordingly. 1tbps of cacao (not cocoa) worked very well too. I used 3 tbsp of honey but it’s actually quite sweet so I think I’d use less next time. Thanks for great idea for a high protein sweet snack. My teenage son loves this too.
I made this today. I am a diabetic type 2 and I adore dark chocolate. I used dark cocoa and maple syrup. I have a fantastic immersion blender and it was a snap to cream all this up. I also added a tiny drop of almond extract and some cinnamon. I’m going to let it set up and try it tomorrow. I tasted it though, and man oh man is it ever yummy.
Thank you so much for your kind review! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
