Why you’ll love this cottage cheese mousse
Cottage cheese can satisfy your chocolate cravings- you heard me. At this point you have to ask: is there anything cottage cheese can’t do!?
This cottage cheese chocolate mousse is smooth, sweet and creamy and far from the regular texture and flavor of cottage cheese. If you’ve never had whipped cottage cheese before, it’s a completely different situation than regular cottage cheese.
You only need a few simple ingredients and a high speed blender or food processor to transform plain cottage cheese into a delicious sweet treat.
Cottage cheese is unique and versatile because of its mild flavor, high protein content and its ability to be blended into a super creamy texture. There are so many delicious ways to use it.
It works well for both savory and sweet recipes, including this high protein chocolate mousse! It’s mild “cheesy” flavor gives this mousse an almost cheesecake-like flavor. Yum!
Let’s get into what you need to make it.

Ingredients
- Cottage cheese: Cottage cheese is of course our secret ingredient. You can use whatever you favorite cottage cheese is, I prefer Good Culture small curd full-fat cottage cheese (4%) for the best creamy texture. If you use fat free cottage cheese, the texture will be less creamy.
- Unsweetened cocoa powder: Cocoa powder is what makes the mousse chocolate-y. If you like a dark chocolate flavor, add more!
- Honey: You can use any liquid sweetener of choice that you enjoy. Maple syrup will also work, but the flavor and sweetness level will be different. If you want a sugar-free option, try a liquid sweetener like allulose.
- Vanilla extract: Just a small amount of vanilla extract adds more flavor to the mousse.
Step-by-step instructions
- Add all ingredients to a food processor (this is my favorite) or high speed blender. You can also use an immersion blender in a tall cylinder container.

- Blend together on high until mouse is completely smooth. Note: If it looks grainy, keep blending!

- Top with whipped cream, fruit, or chocolate shavings!
Note: I find that it has a fluffier texture immediately after blending. If you want it to be more like a cottage cheese chocolate pudding, place in the refrigerator to firm up for about 20-30 minutes before serving.
Storage info: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
Recipe FAQ
Is this a healthy dessert?
As a dietitian, I’m not anti-dessert (sometimes you need the real deal, and that’s okay!). But if you’re looking for a sweet treat that has a little more bang for its buck nutritionally, this is a great option with 15 g of protein per serving to keep you full and support any protein goals you have.
How do I get my cottage cheese smoother?
If you’re cottage cheese is grainy, try blending it for longer! I find that the extra minutes of blending really make a big difference in the smoothness of the mousse. If needed (some blenders/food processors may not be powerful enough), add a splash of milk or heavy cream to help it blend smoothly.
Variations
- Sprinkle with chopped nuts or granola for crunch.
- Top with fresh fruit like sliced strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries.
- Layer with whipped cream and fresh fruit for a mousse parfait.
- Add 1-2 tbsp of peanut butter for a chocolate peanut butter mousse. You can also use almond butter, cashew butter or sunflower seed butter.
- Stir in mini chocolate chips for a chocolate chip mousse.
- Stir in a crumbled Oreo or two for a high protein Oreo mousse!
- Add a tiny bit of peppermint extract for a mint chocolate mousse!

Thanks for the recipe. I was a little skeptical at first being that it used cottage cheese but it actually works.
So here is a question for you. I had gastric bypass and I have type2 diabetes. So I’m looking for recipes that is high in protein, low carbs, low sodium (and I’m not into sugar substitutes) and taste good. To be honest I’m so not a veggie fan and it’s hard for me to digest meats like pork, chicken and red meats. Do you have any recipes that can cover most or all of these.
So glad you enjoyed it! 🙂 I would browse around my site and see which ones will work best for you! If you’re looking for low carb, my pasta dishes might not be the best fit for you but there are lots of others that you can just make some small modifications for :).
You could try Substituting zuchinni or rice noodles for her pasta dishes.
I also am not a fan of artificial sweeteners. I made this with coconut sugar. Gives it a slight coconut flavor but it works well with the cocoa and the vanilla. I have also added just a bit of cinnamon and I’ve tried a bit of chili powder. Sooo good!
Ooooh chili powder! How fun! So glad you like it 🙂
I came here (minus the diabetes) with relatively the same. I was thinking instead of honey, stevia might help me out. And I’m thinking of using cocoa protein powder. higher protein.
I used Godiva chocolate liqueur, a lot of vanilla and cinnamon, twice the amount and maple syrup and melted dark chocolate bits to make a swirl and sea salt. I plan to toast coconut and walnut for garnish. It was very smooth and rich. I want to try this as a savory dish with spinach, Parmesan, garlic, Italian seasoning, and dried chili seeds and spinach Any other suggestions ?
Sounds amazing! You can definitely use cottage cheese as a great savory base, too. My favorite way to use cottage cheese is to blend ranch seasoning powder into it for an easy high protein ranch dip.
The calorie and nutritional info is that for the whole recipe? How many servings does it make generally? I’m going to try it either way!
This makes two servings 🙂 so the nutrition info is for one serving!
I have begun using spiraled, Sauteed zucchini or roasted spaghetti squash in place of pasta for those pasta dishes.
They’re actually a decent substitute. And even though I like the rich pasta taste, I don’t miss the pasta so much; With the good, tasty sauces.
From one Type 2 to another.
Use a low sodium cottage cheese and omit the honey and this would qualify. Top with strawberries or raspberries for a bit of sweetness that won’t spike your blood sugar. It’s not going to be dessert-sweet, but without artificial sweeteners, the goal would be to adapt your taste buds to enjoy the natural sweetness from the dairy and fruit.
Do you think it would work to sweeten with real maple syrup? I’m not a honey fan!
I’ve made it both ways! It works but it’s just not as sweet so you may need to add a bit more maple syrup- you could also use some powdered sugar!
Best thing since sliced bread! Satisfied my sweet tooth like the real thing! Thank you thank you thank you!
Yay! So glad you enjoyed it Carole 🙂
I made it low carb, with stevia and good good maple flavored syrup and it is delicious !
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for sharing your swaps! 🙂
Did you use liquid stevia? And how much?
I used 6 drops of liquid stevia. One tbsp. of cocoa powder. The more cocoa powder you use, the more sweetener it will need.
Would Splenda work
It should!
Oh my goodness this was amazing. I used Stevia instead of honey. It was smooth. Kind of had a bit if a bitter chocolate taste. Which I loved. I only added two tablespoons of cocoa powder. Sugar free cool whip was a perfect compliment. Thank you so very much for this perfect recipe. I soothed my chocolate craving without sugar or tons of calories. The best!!!!
SO glad you enjoyed it Debbie! I agree, it goes so well with some cool whip 🙂
Great recipe! I subbed some coconut sugar and maple syrup for honey and it was yum. Going to add some choc chips and whipped cream.
Glad you enjoyed Maggie 🙂 thank you for the review!
Can this safely be frozen for fudgecicles?
I don’t see why not 🙂
That sounds like an amazing idea! Did you try it yet??
I just made this for my son (he’s 26 🤣) and I went with the 3tbsp. of cocoa for a dark chocolate taste and it was too much. I’m new to cottage cheese recipes and I’m going through menopause and have arthritis so I’m looking for some healthy alternatives to desserts and snacks etc. I am a fan of cottage cheese but my family is not. Anyway I’m going to play around with this recipe like less cocoa etc. Hopefully I will like that better.
I would start with 1 tbsp and work your way up then 🙂
This is sooooooo good! Thank you for this recipe. I bought some plant based cool whip- like topping from Whole Foods which was delicious with it. I am not a fan of the texture of cottage cheese (but love that it packs a lot of protein!) so this is perfect as you don’t even know you’re eating cottage cheese!
Yay so glad you enjoyed! 🙂
