Why you’ll love this
If you love the apple-inspired drinks from Starbucks (like their apple crisp macchiato), you absolutely need to try this homemade version.
This apple brown sugar syrup recipe is SO easy to make. Not only do you only need three ingredients, but it takes less than 10 minutes to make.
It’s an apple season spin on my Easy Brown Sugar Simple Syrup for Coffee– and equally delicious and simple coffee syrup.
You can this to your favorite coffee drinks; this adds delicious sweet apple flavor to both hot coffee and iced coffee. I love adding some to my cold brew coffee with a splash of oat milk!
As a dietitian you might expect that I’d be anti-sugary syrups like this, but instead I like to take a mindful, balanced approach to sugar. Personally, I don’t love sugar alternatives in coffee, so I prefer to make homemade syrup in my own kitchen and then have total control over how much I choose to add!
This homemade apple syrup is full of sweet, cozy flavor that you’ll enjoy all fall and winter long. And bonus- your house is going to smell amazing while you’re making it!
Ingredients
- Apple cider: Apple cider has a stronger flavor than apple juice, so it works wonderfully. You can use apple juice if you don’t have apple cider or can’t find it. This is a great opportunity to grab some from your local apple orchard! You could also make your own cider or juice from fresh apples!
- Dark brown sugar: I love using dark brown sugar versus light brown sugar for brown sugar syrups because it adds a deeper brown sugar flavor.
- Cinnamon sticks: Ground cinnamon will sometimes float to the top of the syrup and get clumpy, so I love using cinnamon sticks instead. They infuse a little autumnal spice perfectly without the fuss.
You can also change up the flavor profile by adding apple pie spice for an apple crisp syrup, pumpkin spice for a pumpkin version, or vanilla extract for some vanilla flavor.
How to make apple brown sugar syrup
- Add brown sugar and apple cider to a medium saucepan and combine using a wooden spoon. Add cinnamon sticks.
- Bring ingredients to a boil on medium-high heat and then immediately lower heat to a simmer.
- Simmer for 5-10 minutes, stirring regularly. The longer you simmer the syrup, the thicker the syrup will be when it cools (the flavor will also deepen more with a longer simmer time). Once cooled, remove cinnamon sticks. Note: Syrup will appear quite “watery” when it’s hot. Don’t be alarmed, it will thicken as it cools and is refrigerated.
- Add this apple brown sugar syrup to your favorite iced or hot coffee drinks, tea, or even ice cream, apple pie or apple crisp!
How to store
You can store this apple syrup in an airtight container (I like to use a mason jar with a lid) in the fridge for about a week for max freshness and quality.
