Why you’ll love this 5-minute guacamole
This simple guacamole recipe is so easy, so fresh, and only uses a few simple ingredients like ripe avocados, fresh cilantro and lime juice. Guacamole is one of my favorite foods, so I feel like I’m an expert on this one!
I love using this homemade guacamole recipe for taco nights or for a quick healthy snack. Whipping up a small batch of guacamole is also the best way to use up that extra avocado you have in the fridge.
Avocados are the perfect healthy fat addition to any meal or snack to help you stay fuller and more satisfied longer, so this simple recipe is a no brainer!
Guacamole isn’t just for chips, either. It’s the perfect dip for your favorite veggies and crackers! I love pairing mine with bell peppers and whole grain Triscuit Thins (my favorite).
You can get your kids involved, too, by tasking them with mashing up the avocado. My kids love to help in the kitchen, and bonus points if it helps them try new foods.
You only need a few fresh ingredients to throw this easy guacamole recipe together, so let’s get into what you need next.
Ingredients
- Avocado: Just one of them! Make sure your avocado is ripe & easy to cut so that the avocado flesh can be removed easily. I like chunky avocado but you can mash yours to exactly how you enjoy it.
- Fresh garlic clove: I like to use a microplane but you can also finely mince your garlic or sub in garlic powder. Fresh garlic is my secret ingredient to adding tons of fresh flavor to this guacamole.
- Red onion: If you don’t like red onion, you can omit it, but it adds the perfect amount of flavor and bite! You can also add any other chopped onion you like, like white onion.
- Lime juice: Lime juice is my preferred citrus for guac but you can use lemon juice if you’re in a pinch too! I love lots of lime juice- you can add ad much lime juice as you like!
- Fresh cilantro: I’m a huge cilantro lover, but if it’s not for you, this is easily omitted too.
- Salt & black pepper
- Optional: Chopped cherry tomatoes or chopped bell peppers
Step-by-step instructions
- Slice avocado in half, remove the pit, and then scoop avocado into a mixing bowl.
- Add the garlic, red onion, lime juice, salt, black pepper, and cilantro to the bowl.
- Mash the avocado and mix guacamole with a fork, whisk, or potato masher. Mash the avocado to be as chunky or smooth as you prefer.
- Taste and add additional cilantro, lime juice, or salt and pepper as needed and enjoy with chips or veggies for dipping!
Recipe FAQ
How to store?
If you don’t enjoy all of it in one sitting, you can store leftover guacamole in an airtight container with a lid in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. A squeeze of fresh lime juice on the surface of the guacamole will help minimize browning (you can do this with leftover avocado too). If some browning occurs, it’s still safe to eat. Just scrape off the top layer of brown and enjoy the rest!
How to tell if my avocado is ripe enough?
When picking out an avocado, you’ll want to find one that is slightly soft to the touch but not mushy. When you squeeze gently, it should give just slightly under the pressure of your hands. Anything too hard will be inedible and if i’ts too soft or mushy will be likely be too ripe.
Variations
- Like hot and spicy guac? Add a chopped up jalapeńo, hot sauce, cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper for a spicy guacamole version.
- Add corn & black beans for a bit more texture and fiber.
- Crumbled goat cheese or cotija cheese would jazz up the flavor and creaminess of this one avocado guacamole, too.
- Turn it into a high protein guacamole by adding a scoop of plain Greek yogurt (it tastes like sour cream when mixed in!).
