Why you’ll love it
Confession: I love store-bought ranch seasoning mix. It’s quick, it’s easy and it’s pretty foolproof. But, this buffalo-style homemade ranch dressing is worth making homemade (and that’s saying something from me!).
This is an absolute favorite in my house and we use it for anything that needs a sauce, dip, or dressing: salads, veggies, chicken strips, chicken nuggets, french fries, sandwiches, anything! The best part is truly how versatile it is.
This buffalo ranch sauce has the perfect amount of spicy kick and creamy ranch flavor, so if you already love both flavors separately, you’re definitely going to love this one!
Plus it’s made a little bit lighter than traditional creamy dressings and dips with Greek yogurt as one of the main ingredients (and you won’t be able to tell!). There’s even 3 grams of protein per serving!
Making homemade sauce and dressing can feel intimidated but it’s actually incredibly simple and truly just so much more flavorful than buying at the the grocery store. And once you use this as a buffalo ranch dip for your favorite veggies, you’re not going to want to go back!
Making your own delicious sauces and dressings truly takes your meals to the next level, trust me! Let’s get into what you need to make this spicy ranch sauce!
Ingredients
You only need a few simple ingredients and seasonings to make this.
- Buttermilk: Buttermilk is a typical ingredient you’ll find in ranch dressings because it gives it a unique creamy tangy flavor. If you don’t have any, you can make your own by combining 1 cup of milk with 1 tbsp of vinegar or lemon juice and letting it sit for 5 minutes.
- Greek yogurt: I love using Greek yogurt in this sauce as a sour cream replacement because it’s so similar flavor wise but offers a little more nutrition.
- Milk: You’ll need just a bit milk to thin the sauce out a bit. Use any kind that you like, keeping in mind that full-fat or reduced-fat will be creamier and skim milk (nonfat milk) will yield a thinner sauce.
- Mayonnaise: A lot of ranch dressings call for quite a bit of mayo, but this one only needs a little bit to give it that classic creamy ranch flavor.
- Buffalo sauce: Of course, we need buffalo sauce. Personally my favorites are Frank’s RedHot Buffalo and Primal Kitchen Buffalo.
- Ranch seasoning blend: For the ranch seasoning blend you’ll need salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, dried parsley, dried dill, and dried chives.
Step-by-step instructions
- In a small bowl, make your ranch seasoning blend by mixing salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, dried parsley, dried dill and dried chives.
- In a medium sized bowl (or directly in a mason jar), mix buttermilk, milk, Greek yogurt, mayonnaise, buffalo sauce and ranch seasoning blend.
- Mix until thoroughly combined. Note: If you’d like a thinner sauce, add additional milk 1 tablespoon at a time.

Recipe FAQ
How to store
Store this buffalo ranch sauce in an airtight container for up to 5 days. To make things super simple, make your sauce directly in a mason jar with a lid for easy storage!
I don’t have buffalo sauce! Can I still make this?
You can also use regular hot sauce instead of buffalo sauce and it will still be delicious! It will just be more of a traditional spicy sauce versus buffalo ranch. As long as you like spicy flavors it’s still a great option!
Can I use fresh herbs instead of dried herbs?
Absolutely! In general 1 teaspoon of dried herbs is equal to 1 tablespoon of fresh herbs, and you can always adjust to your preference. As soon as my garden is open for business I’ll definitely be making mine with fresh chives, dill and parsley!
Can I use this recipe for regular ranch dressing?
Yes! If you leave out the buffalo sauce you’ll still be left with a delicious tangy buttermilk ranch dressing. Without the hot sauce I do like to add a bit more salt and pepper, but you can add to taste.
