What to look for in gluten-free bread
Navigating the grocery store aisles for gluten-free products can be overwhelming, and finding a good gluten free bread (at a decent price point!) can be a challenge!
Whether you struggle with gluten sensitivity, have celiac disease, or simply prefer gluten-free alternatives, finding a delicious and nutritious bread for your gluten-free diet is essential.
As a Registered Dietitian, here is what I look for in the best supermarket gluten-free bread.
1. Fiber
Just like with regular wheat bread, I recommend looking for gluten-free breads that have at least a few grams of fiber per slice. Gluten-free breads tend to be lower in fiber since they canโt use whole wheat flour, so this can get tricky!
Fiber helps to keep you full, supports your gut health, and can even reduce your risk for certain diseases.
A good reference point is to look for at least 2-3g of fiber per slice. This ensures that your bread not only tastes good but also supports your health, too.
2. Protein
When you choose breads that have both protein and fiber in them, youโll feel more full and satisfied for longer. I recommend choosing breads with a few grams of protein per slice if possible.
3. Ingredients
High-quality ingredients make a difference in both taste and nutrition. Look for breads with a list of ingredients made up of whole grains, seeds, and other nutrient-dense ingredients.
4. Availability
Many gluten-free breads can be hard to find in local stores and are best purchased online. Donโt forget to check Amazon or specialty food websites for availability and consider buying in bulk to freeze for later use.
When youโre in your local grocery store, be sure to check the freezer aisle, as many gluten-free breads come frozen.
5. Taste
Last but not least, it is important that you enjoy what youโre eating. Be sure to try a few different kinds so that you can figure out which one is the best choice for you.
