Why you’ll love it

This creamy, tangy and delicious sauce is inspired by the secret sauce aka Smash sauce that you’ll find at your local Smashburger burger joint. But, you don’t have to be a Smashburger fan to love this one.

It’s the perfect sauce to combine with your favorite burger toppings to take your meal from ordinary burgers to flavorful and delicious.

My favorite part about this recipe is that it’s made with ingredients that you probably have on hand at any given time. That means you can throw this sauce together whenever you need it for a last minute burger night! Let’s get into what’s in it!

What is Smash Sauce?

While the actual recipe for the classic Smash sauce isn’t up for grabs, the general flavors are mayo, mustard, pickles, lemon juice, and some spices! Here’s what you’ll need to make this homemade classic burger sauce:

  • Mayo: My favorite mayonnaise to use for this recipe is Sir Kensington’s. You can use whatever your favorite is!
  • Mustard: This recipe calls for classic yellow mustard, but you can use dijon mustard for a delicious twist too.
  • Ketchup: Just a touch of ketchup adds exactly the right amount of sweetness to this sauce.
  • Chopped pickles: I like to use dill pickles but you can use sweet pickles too if that’s your preference. You can also sub in sweet relish!
  • Paprika: Just a pinch of paprika adds an extra kick of flavor to the sauce.
  • Lemon juice: Some like to use dill pickle juice here, but I find just a little bit of lemon juice to be the perfect way to add some tang to the sauce.

How to make smash burger sauce

  1. Add all of your ingredients to a small bowl and whisk until fully combined. Add salt and pepper to taste and adjust any other ingredients if necessary.
  2. Top your favorite burger, sandwiches or burger salads or use as an amazing sauce to dip your fries in! Store in an airtight container.

How to make a smash burger-style burger

  1. Season 4-ounce ground beef patties on each side with salt and pepper.
  2. Preheat a large skillet or griddle to medium-high heat.
  3. Place the patties on the pan and use a large griddle-style spatula (a big flat spatula) to flatten the burger patty. Cook for 60-90 seconds and then flip. Cook for another 60 seconds or so until cooked to your liking. Burger is done when you have nice crisp edges with a juicy interior!
  4. Add cheese if desired and serve on hamburger buns with smash sauce and your favorite toppings!

Variations

  • Sweet smash sauce: Add a squeeze of honey, maple syrup or a pinch of sugar for a sweeter sauce.
  • Spicy smash sauce: Add a dash of your favorite hot sauce, chopped jalapeños, or a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • Garlic onion sauce: Add a teaspoon or so of garlic powder and onion powder for a flavorful twist.
  • Add more flavor with Worcester sauce or horseradish.
  • More pickles! Add more pickles or sweet pickle relish
  • Use as a dipping sauce: Use as a dip sauce for French fries, sweet potato fries, onion rings, roasted or fresh veggies, or tots!
