What You’ll Need

Labeled ingredients to make an acai bowl at home.

Just some fruit and coconut water, and you’re off to the races! Here’s a shopping list for you (you’ll find exact measurements in the recipe card below):

  • Frozen acai – Most commonly, you’ll find acai in pre-portioned packets, but you can also find it in a larger bag full of pieces. Either will work, and either way, make sure it is unsweetened.
  • Blueberries – Fresh or frozen both work. You can also use frozen mixed berries.
  • Banana – For a boost of natural sweetness!
  • Coconut water – I like using coconut water here because it adds a little tropical flair. You could use plain water instead. Juice would also work (maybe orange juice or guava juice!), although it will make your bowl a bit sweeter. You can also make it creamy with your favorite milk.

Variation Ideas

  • Fruit swap. Feel free to swap out the blueberries for strawberries, raspberries, or even something fun like pineapple or mango.
  • Make it creamy. If you want a creamier acai bowl experience to throw a dollop or two of Greek yogurt into the blender. Or, replace the coconut walk with coconut milk.
  • Nut butter twist. Add a little healthy fat and protein to these bowls with your favorite nut butter. Just add 1-2 tablespoons. I love adding peanut butter or almond butter.
  • Topping ideas:
    • Banana slices
    • Fresh berries like strawberries or blueberries
    • Shredded coconut
    • Hemp seeds
    • Chia seeds
    • Nuts
    • Granola

How to Store Extras

You can keep any leftover acai mixture in the Ninja Creami pint container (with the lid on) or another airtight, freezer-safe container. Store it in the freezer for up to 1 week.

When you’re ready to enjoy, you can either let it sit at room temperature until it softens or run smoothie bowl mode x1.

My Pro Tips

Recipe Tips

  • Check the sweetness. Once you’ve blended everything together, give the mixture a taste. If it’s not sweet enough, you can add a little honey or maple syrup (start with one tablespoon at a time).
  • Don’t overfill. There is a max line on the Ninja Creami pint container. Don’t fill past that point, as the mixture will expand a bit as it freezes.
  • Freeze for 24 hours. While it’s hard to resist digging in right away, letting the acai mixture freeze for a full 24 hours (before running it through the Ninja Creami) will give you the best texture. If you skip this step, your breakfast might turn out runny.
  • Get the texture right. If your sorbet turns out crumbly after running it through the respin cycle, don’t worry! Just add a small splash of coconut water and run the cycle again to achieve a smoother, creamier consistency.
