Why You’ll Love it

Cottage cheese is taking the recipe world by storm because of its creamy, mild flavor and versatility. It’s a great way to add extra protein to your day with an impressive 14 grams of protein per 1/2 cup of cottage cheese. (Check out all of my Cottage Cheese Recipes Here!)

This cottage cheese fruit smoothie has 21 grams of protein and 8 grams of fiber so it’s perfect for kicking off your day. It’s also a great alternative to switch up traditional yogurt smoothies or protein shakes with protein powder.

If you don’t love the texture of cottage cheese normally, you won’t even notice it in this recipe! The best part is that the cottage cheese blends into the perfect creamy texture and gives this high-protein smoothie a yummy cheesecake-like taste.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Here’s what you’ll need! Be sure to scroll down to the recipe card for the complete ingredients list with measurements.

  • Cottage Cheese: The star of the show, cottage cheese! Good Culture is my absolute favorite brand of cottage cheese to use, but any cottage cheese will work. I prefer full-fat cottage cheese for a creamier texture, but any will work.
  • Strawberries: Use frozen or fresh berries to add lots of fiber, vitamin C, and strawberry flavor to this shake. Frozen strawberries make the smoothie thicker so if you use fresh strawberries, throw in a few cubes of ice.
  • Banana: Use frozen banana to add natural sweetness and fiber. I recommend using ripe bananas (think perfectly yellow, not too ripe!) so that they add enough sweetness.
  • Milk of choice: Use whichever kind of milk you enjoy. You can use regular dairy milk, oat milk, soy milk, or even almond milk for a bit of nutty flavor.
  • Ground flaxseed: Ground flax seeds add healthy fats (omega 3 fatty acids) and fiber to this nutrient-packed smoothie. You could also add chia seeds.
  • Honey: I like to add a generous drizzle of honey, but you can omit this if you want a lower-sugar smoothie. You can also use maple syrup or any other sweetener you like.

Recipe FAQ

Should I use fat-free or full fat cottage cheese?

Both will work! Fat-free cottage cheese has less fat and less calories than full fat cottage cheese, but whole milk cottage cheese is creamier. Choose whichever kind of cottage cheese you prefer!

Can you taste the cottage cheese?

Yes and no- the cottage cheese gives the smoothie a light cheesecake-like flavor, but it doesn’t taste the same as if you’re eating plain cottage cheese. If you’re worried about the texture, don’t! Cottage cheese blends super easily and ends up having a creamy finish.

Can I use fresh fruit instead of frozen?

Yes either will work, but if you don’t use any frozen fruit I recommend throwing in a handful of ice cubes for a more milkshake-like and extra thick smoothie.

Variation Ideas

  • Blueberry cottage cheese smoothie: Use 1 cup frozen blueberries instead of strawberries.
  • Mango strawberry cottage cheese smoothie: Swap the banana for a 1/2 cup of mango.
  • Peanut butter banana smoothie: Add 1-2 tablespoons of peanut butter and omit the strawberries.
  • Higher protein cottage cheese smoothie: Make this smoothie even higher protein by adding a scoop of your favorite vanilla protein powder.
  • Greek yogurt smoothie: Swap the cottage cheese for plain or vanilla Greek yogurt for an equally high protein smoothie with a tangier flavor.
  • Add greens: Add a handful of spinach, kale or any other greens for more nutrients.
  • Strawberry cottage cheese smoothie bowl: Reduce liquid to 1/4-1/2 cup and add your favorite toppings to turn this into a creamy smoothie bowl!
