This avocado mash takes two minutes to make and can be used for the best avocado toast, as a super quick dip, or to spread on your favorite sandwich.

It calls for four simple ingredients and is the only mashed avocado you’ll ever need, I promise.

A small bowl of avocado mash on a countertop, half an avocado, and a lemon wedge.

This almost seems like a silly recipe, but I truly think there’s a perfect formula for the best avocado mash, and I want to share it with you. Let’s get into what you need (it’s so easy, I promise)!

The best mashed avocado has creamy avocado, a hint of citrus, and salt and pepper to taste.

Four Simple Ingredients

How to Choose a Ripe Avocado

This is the hardest part of the recipe, am I right!? When you’re choosing fresh avocados for avocado mash, here are my best tips:

  1. It should have a little give when you squeeze it. It shouldn’t feel mushy, but it shouldn’t feel hard as a rock, either.
  2. Ripe avocados tend to have a darker color, ranging from dark green to black.
  3. The skin will probably be bumpy.

With that being said, avocados can be really finicky! If your avocado has some brown spots inside, just cut them out and the rest is fine to eat.

If you want to skip the guesswork altogether, you can always grab pre-diced avocado.

How to Make the Best Avocado Mash

  1. On a cutting board or plate, mash avocado with a fork (if you’re making a lot, use a potato masher!). My favorite consistency is guacamole-like, but you can make it a more creamy texture or chunkier if you prefer.
  2. Squeeze a teaspoon of lemon juice on to your avocado mash. Fresh lemon juice is my fave, but feel free to use the pre-juiced kind too.
  3. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt and pepper to taste.

Avocados turn brown quickly when exposed to air, so use immediately or store for 1-2 days with plastic wrap laid directly on top of the mash to provide a barrier from the air.

  • Use to dip chips, veggies or whole grain crackers for an easy balanced snack.
  • Swap lemon juice for lime juice and add cilantro for a super quick guacamole.
  • Add a layer to your favorite sandwich instead of mayo for a boost of healthy fats and creamy avocado flavor.
  • Elevate a classic BLT sandwich with avocado mash.
  • Top toast with smoked salmon, green onions, and a layer of cream cheese.
  • Add a scoop with sour cream to your favorite taco or fajita recipes.

how long can it be stored in the refrigerator after it is mashed?

I find a couple of days to be fine as long as it has the lemon juice in it. It may brown a little bit, but it’s still okay! You can prolong browning too by putting plastic wrap directly on the top.
